Journaling at the end of the year is by far the best combo you’ll find.

Yes, even better than wine and pizza, and journaling on a Sunday.

Why? Because it allows you to take a step back, reflect, and process everything that’s happened over the past 12 months— the good, the bad and the ugly.

An end-of-year reflection encourages you to step into a new year feeling confident about what’s next rather than lost and dissatisfied.

Here are 51 journal prompts to sprinkle throughout your December.

Perks of doing an end-of-year reflection

Journaling is a powerful tool for self-reflection and personal growth.

Especially at the end of the year.

It gives you the chance to pause and process everything that has happened over the past 12 months. Because let’s face it— it is very easy to lose sight of your achievements in favour of focusing on the setbacks.

But by using the right type of journal prompts, you can instead acknowledge your growth, celebrate your wins and learn from your challenges so you can move into a new year with clarity and purpose.

So if there’s just one thing you do this month, make sure you take the time to reflect on both the highs and lows from this year.

I promise, it will set you up for an even better 12 months as you’re setting yourself up for a fresh start.

HOT TIP 🔥 Pair your end-of-year reflection with your 2026 vision board day to make it even more intentional.

To recap…, the perks of doing an end-of-year reflection include:

  • Taking stock of your entire year
  • Celebrating your wins (big and small)
  • Learning from the challenges and setbacks
  • Gaining clarity on your next steps
  • Realigning with your vision and long-term goals
  • Setting intentions that truly align with where you’re headed
  • Practising gratitude for all the moments that shaped you
  • Starting the new year with a fresh focus

And last but not least… journal prompt number 51

  • What one word would you use to describe your entire year?

Mine was foundation—building a foundation to create lasting growth and alignment. Not just in my work but in my health and relationships too.

I pivoted a lot this year, and I’m thankful for that. But it did mean my progress was slow. Slower than I’d hoped for when I sat down to do my vision this time last year.

But that’s okay. Sometimes things don’t go to plan. But you know what? After taking some time to reflect, I realised that that pivot was so necessary because it led me to where I am now.

More confident in my business. More clarity on what’s next. And more motivation and grit to just go for it next year.

Final thoughts

It’s so easy to get caught up in the busyness of day-to-day life and lose sight of what truly matters.

Is your career aligned with your values and goals?

Do you feel fulfilled?

Are you even having fun?

By using the end of the year to pause, reflect and reset, you can stay focused on what you truly want and make intentional choices that bring you closer to your desired future.

Reflection isn’t just about looking back— it’s about using what you’ve learnt to move forward with intention.

Nothing is ever set in stone. Your values, goals and vision will evolve over time. Taking the time to reflect yearly ensures you stay aligned with the person you want to become.

And remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to journaling. Whether you spend 30 minutes diving deep or simply jot down a few thoughts, what matters most is showing up for yourself and making it meaningful.
