How To Cultivate a Positive and Resilient Mindset (with Journal Prompts)

TL;DR: Your mindset shapes everything—your confidence, your success, your ability to handle life’s challenges, etc. Want to be resilient? Start journaling, lean into who you already are, prioritise self-care like your future depends on it (because it does), and cut out the energy-drainers. Your best life starts with the way you think—so let’s get that right.

Your mindset is the foundation for optimising your entire life.

From your work to your personal life, relationships, appearance, physical health and happiness. Without the support of a resilient and positive mindset, everything else will not function as best it can. You will simply crumble under the pressure of life’s challenges and obstacles.

And repeating affirmations in the mirror can only take you so far.

Sure, they can help rewire your thinking patterns, but you need to actively work on building a growth mindset.

So whether you’re looking to shed societal expectations, quit your toxic job or take the leap and travel solo, mindset is the key.

Here’s everything you need to know about how to cultivate a positive and resilient mindset. I encourage you to bookmark this page so you can refer back to it whenever you need to.

Why mindset matters

Your mindset is what pushes you out of your comfort zone and influences every step you take towards becoming your best self.

It shapes your beliefs, thoughts, choices and actions. So you want to make sure it is wired to work for you.

For example, if you’re in a negative headspace and face resistance, then chances are you’ll most likely give up on your goals or dreams from frustration or fear.

A fixed mindset is what will keep you stuck in your comfort zone and stop you from moving forward.

But if you cultivate a growth mindset, then you will be more willing to embrace change and continue to grow as a person. You’ll develop the strength and ability you need to navigate any ups and downs and keep going.

I mean, imagine waking up every morning feeling ready to conquer the day. You have the self-belief, motivation and confidence to go after your wildest dreams.

That’s the power of having a positive and resilient mindset.

It allows you to recognise your own ability and potential, go against the norm and create the life you actually want to live.

Cultivating a growth mindset can also help you to:

  • Build healthier thinking habits
  • Keep an optimistic outlook on life
  • Tackle obstacles with confidence
  • Take risks and go after your deepest desires
  • Adapt to change and embrace new situations with ease (this one is for all of you aspiring solo travellers)
  • Manage stress effectively and stay calm
  • Strengthen relationships with others as well as with yourself
  • Increase daily performance and productivity
  • Boost your self-awareness and authenticity
  • Support mental health and overall well-being

5 ways to cultivate a positive and resilient mindset

No matter how tempting it is to quit your 9-to-5 and travel the world, you need to do the inner work first. Because let me tell you — going against the norm is not as easy as it looks.

You need to have the clarity and confidence it takes to stop questioning whether you’re on the right path or not.

You need to have the courage and resilience it takes to tackle any obstacles or setbacks that come your way.

You need to have belief in yourself to make it happen.

And this all begins with mindset.

There are plenty of ways to cultivate a positive and resilient mindset. And below are the essential practices that worked for me. I share them in the hope they will inspire and help you in some way.

But just be aware that what works for me might not work for you. I encourage you to find your own unique approach.

1 | Journal

Gaining self-awareness was the main thing that got me out of a toxic situation and on a flight to the life of my dreams.

It was an absolute game-changer for me. The tool I turned to the most to help me gain awareness: journaling.

Journaling is one of those simple practices that has powerful results.

Not only can journaling be used to make sense of your thoughts and feelings, but it also gives you the space to open up without judgment so you can think more clearly about what you truly need. So do not underestimate the power of this simple ritual.

Whether it’s pouring your thoughts into a journal or writing down 3 things you’re grateful for, journaling nurtures self-awareness, motivation and a healthy mindset.

Plus, it’s super easy to get started with, as there are no rules to it.

All you need is a notebook and pen, some space in your daily schedule and plenty of things to be grateful for.

Build your daily journaling habit by:

  • Finding a gap in your schedule
  • Committing to just 5 minutes a day
  • Setting an alarm to prompt you
  • Using a guided reflective journal
  • Keeping it visible

2 | Lean into who you already are

POV: Self-development is mistaken as something we do to become somebody else.

We adopt new habits, develop new skills, change jobs and move house or country in the hope that these things will make us better, and of course happier.

But what I’ve realised over the last year is that true growth comes from within.

You don’t need to learn more skills or strengths.

You’ve already got what you need to go after your wildest dreams.

And this comes down to you recognising what you already possess.

So instead of reading yet another personal development book, trying out another “woo-woo” trend or turning to manifestation in the hopes that things will suddenly click for you… Stop searching.

Lean into who you are and what you already have. a.k.a. your strengths, your skills and your unique qualities.

Because, let me tell you, what you’ve got is already enough. You just need to unlock it.

3 | Dedicate time to self-care daily

Let’s face it: unexpected challenges and obstacles are inevitable.

Whether it’s daily, weekly or monthly, roadblocks are bound to happen — it’s a fact of life. (Seriously, in the words of Lauren Conrad, “Life’s tough, get a helmet.”)

To be able to successfully overcome these challenges, you need emotional resilience.

And it is self-care that makes this resilience stronger.

I mean, think about it: how many times have you had a minor breakdown over a small, insignificant thing because you were already feeling emotionally burnt out?

Remember, it’s always the straw that breaks the camel’s back, not the heaviest object.

So, if you’re facing multiple obstacles, it’s likely the smallest one will cause the biggest emotional impact.

But by taking the time to decompress and recharge every single day, you can reset your mindset both mentally and emotionally. This, in turn, strengthens your resilience and empowers you to navigate life’s ups and downs with greater ease.

And because self-care is awesome — it doesn’t just help build emotional resilience. It boosts every inch of your health and well-being.

The reality is, if you’re not taking adequate care of yourself, then you cannot perform as well as you want to in all aspects of life — whether at work, with friends or when reaching your goals.

Self-care is what helps keep your “cup” full so you can continue to show up with a healthy mindset for yourself and for others.

And before you start rolling your eyes at dedicating time to self-care yet again, remember that it doesn’t have to be an all-day event to be effective.

Incorporate small doses of self-care throughout your schedule to make it more manageable.

This might simply look like:

  • Reading for 20 minutes as soon as you wake up
  • Going on a 30-minute walk
  • Engaging in a 25-minute yoga flow
  • Taking a 5-minute break in between tasks
  • Journaling for 10 minutes before you go to bed

4 | Surround yourself with positive influences

PSA: Who you hang out with can greatly impact your mindset.

If you’re around people who constantly complain, gossip, criticise others or focus on negativity, it won’t be long before you start feeling the same way.

It’s like eating junk food every day — you wouldn’t do that to your body, so why do it to your mind?

Instead, socialise with people who lift you up, support your dreams and make you laugh. You want cheerleaders, not naysayers.

This doesn’t mean you need to cut off everyone in your life who’s a bit triggering, but consciously choosing to spend more time with positive people will help you stay on track towards your goals.

Surrounding yourself with positive influences might look like:

  • Unfollowing anyone on social media who triggers you
  • Limiting time with negative people or those who don’t understand your dreams
  • Joining a group or online community with like-minded people
  • Leaving your hometown and travelling the world
  • Working with a coach who can remind you of your strengths and cheer you on

5 | Celebrate your wins (no matter how small)

As inherently negative people, we tend to fixate on our shortcomings rather than our successes.

Imagine you got out of your comfort zone, took the leap and went on your first solo travel trip. (Woo, by the way!) Chances are you’ll focus on the fact that you didn’t manage to save money for a house rather than celebrate everything else you did achieve.

And what happens when you put yourself down? Your mindset and self-belief take a huge hit.

But if you do the opposite and focus on the incredible things you did manage to achieve, you’ll feel way more capable and confident in yourself.

So, celebrate every single win, no matter how small.

Acknowledge each milestone you reach and give yourself more credit. Even if all you do is make it out of bed, shower and get dressed on a particularly bad, low-energy day.

This is still progress.

I promise this simple act of celebrating your wins will not only boost your mindset but will also motivate you to keep moving forward.

To celebrate your wins, I encourage you to:

  • Keep a journal where you note down your accomplishments
  • Say them out loud (you don’t need to shout it from the rooftop, but at least verbally acknowledge your wins)
  • Share your wins with a close friend or loved one to make it feel even more real
  • Fist-pump or give yourself a hug
  • Pop open a bottle of Prosecco if you’re feeling Boujee

Final thoughts

Cultivating a positive and resilient mindset has been the most important part of my journey.

I wouldn’t be here* if I hadn’t worked internally on my mindset for the last 6-ish years.*(By here, I mean nomading around Southeast Asia as I write this.)

I’ve always been a big believer in freedom and breaking free of societal expectations, but it took me a while to build up enough courage to really go after the life I wanted to create for myself.

The truth is, during my twenties, my self-belief was non-existent.

I had low self-esteem and would turn to alcohol to give me the confidence I needed to feel validated. I’d spend thousands of dollars on clothes because I believed material possessions would make me feel fulfilled.

But those things only made me feel worse about myself.

It was only when I stopped trying to be someone else and started to lean into my authentic self that things finally clicked. I now no longer look for external validation and instead prioritise self-love and inner acceptance.

Working on my mindset was the key.

It gave me the self-belief I needed to go after my wildest dreams.

So, if there’s only one thing you take away from this blog, make it this post.

You’ve got this.
