PSA: If you’re not building a career that aligns with your values, it’s always going to feel like something is missing.
You’ll end up working even harder in your job to make up for it, hoping your next promotion or pay rise will magically fix that empty feeling.
Spoiler: It won’t… because you can’t hustle your way out of misalignment.
The real magic happens when you start making intentional shifts toward a job that actually lights you up. When you do, everything will just fall into place. You’ll trust your decisions, stop second-guessing yourself and finally step into your power.
Alignment isn’t some woo-woo concept. It’s about knowing what truly matters to you and creating a career that reflects that. Because when your career vibes with your values, you’ll feel more grounded, magnetic, and unstoppable.
Let’s break it down step by step.
P.S. If you’re new here, hey! I’m Thalia. I help 9-to-5 girlies recover from burnout and transform their draining AF job into a magnetic career they love. Every week(ish), I share content on burnout recovery, self-development, finding joy, and career growth. Subscribe here so you never miss a debrief.
Step 1: Map out your core values
Fear is probably the number one reason why you’re still stuck in your draining AF job. (Let me know in the comment section if I’ve completely missed the mark here.)
We’ve been taught that security matters way more than personal fulfilment, so we rarely stop to question whether our job is something we truly want or if it even aligns with who we are.
This is how burnout often sneaks in. When your work and values aren’t vibing, life can feel heavy. You’re showing up daily, giving 110%, but something still feels off.
Mapping out your core values is how you step off autopilot and into a more intentional career.
TL;DR: Core values are basically your guiding principles—think of them like your own personal compass or North Star. When you’re clear on what you actually care about, you can prioritise your time and energy on those things rather than on random shit that doesn’t serve you.
But this is where things get interesting…
Because you don’t technically need to quit your job* to feel more aligned. It all starts with figuring out what drives you (aka your values) and then finding ways to incorporate them into your work.
Action Steps:
- Reflect on the times when you felt genuinely happy and fulfilled
- Identify what values were present in those moments
- Write down a list of 10-15 values that deeply resonate with you
- Narrow it down to your top five core values
- Compare these values to your current role—how can you bridge the gap?
*Unless you’re in a toxic job, then get the hell out of there
Step 2: Realign with your values
Are you working in a place that supports your values (aka the stuff you actually care about)?
If your gut is telling you “no”, then it’s time to do something about that.
And before you freak TF out, it doesn’t technically mean you have to quit your job right this moment. It starts with making small shifts within your current role to see if that positively changes things.
For example, if you value creativity but feel weighed down by mundane admin tasks, look for ways to invite more creativity into your personal life through hobbies and creative side-projects.
Or, if you crave freedom but feel trapped behind a desk, look into remote work options at your current company or negotiate a more flexible work schedule.
Action Steps:
- Use this workbook to help you apply your values IRL
- Audit your current job and daily tasks—do they align with your core values?
- Pinpoint small adjustments you can make that bring your job closer to your values
- Explore side-projects or hobbies outside of work that keep you feeling inspired
- Set one small, actionable goal to start aligning your work with your values today
Step 3: Find ‘the thing’ that gets you out of bed
Also known as your Ikigai.
This is what inspires you to jump out of bed every morning, excited to face each day. It’s about living a life that feels satisfying and authentic, guided by what truly motivates you.
Ikigai might be an ancient Japanese philosophy, but it’s still a powerful framework to use today.
It involves identifying the sweet spot between four key areas:
- What you love: your passion and mission
- What you’re good at: your passion and profession
- What the world needs: your mission and vocation
- What you can be paid for: your profession and vocation
When all four align, work stops feeling like a grind because you’ve essentially unlocked your personal blueprint for a more fulfilling life.
And here’s the thing… You don’t have to quit your job to find your Ikigai.
Doing this exercise while you’re still in your job can open up new opportunities for you to reshape your role or even approach your work in a way that feels much more aligned.
Action Steps:
- List out everything you’re passionate about and that brings you joy
- Identify your natural strengths and skills
- Find the overlap between what you love, what you’re good at, and what the world needs
- Look into roles or projects that align with your “sweet spot”
- Start making small shifts toward work that fulfils you rather than drains you
Step 4: Design a ‘hell yes’ lifestyle
Burnout thrives when you’re stuck living by someone else’s rules.
Maybe you’re grinding through the 9-to-5, living for the weekends, and barely scraping together enough energy to do it all again on Monday.
I get it. I used to be that girl.
Back when I lived in London, my life looked great from the outside. The reality? I was drained, anxious, and completely lost. I was chasing success according to someone else’s definition, and it left me burnt out.
That’s when I discovered lifestyle design—a powerful way to create a life that actually feels good instead of one you just survive.
In the corporate world, we’re conditioned to believe that our career should come first, leaving little room (or energy) to build a life outside of work. But what if you could fit your job around your lifestyle and values—not the other way around?
Lifestyle design isn’t about big, dramatic changes. It’s about making intentional shifts to create more freedom in the life you already have.
Action Steps:
- Define what success really means to you (not your parents, not your boss, not Instagram)
- Map out what an ideal day looks like—where does work fit in?
- Pinpoint your energy givers vs. energy takers—then start cutting out the takers
- Pick your non-negotiables (daily habits/rituals that keep you feeling 100%)
- Focus on small, consistent changes, one habit at a time
Step 5: Book a 90-minute blueprint call with me
If you’ve read this blog post and worked through the framework, but still feel stuck — that’s okay.
Sometimes you need someone to look at the bigger picture with you. Someone who gets what you’re going through, can help you spot the patterns you can’t see yet and help you map out a clear way forward.
That’s exactly what we’ll do together in this 90-minute blueprint call.
We’ll dive deep into what’s burning you out, what you actually want from your career (and life), and map out your EXACT next steps, whether that looks like quitting your job or staying and reshaping your role to better align with your goals and values.
You’ll walk away with an INSANE amount of clarity, an action plan that feels doable, and peace of mind that you can’t get from panic-asking ChatGPT at 2 am, “Should I quit my job?”
Action Steps:
- Book your session now, as spots are limited
- Add the date and time to your calendar
- Write down your top 3 goals and bring them to our call
- Start thinking about your BIG dreams in life
- Come prepared with a stable wifi connection, a notebook and a pen
Final thoughts
Before you respond to passive-aggressive Slack messages with 🖕 or impulsively send a resignation letter to your boss, try to flip the narrative on your job and transform it into something you love.
Trust me, you don’t need to quit your job, book a one-way flight to Bali and burn your entire career down to the ground to beat burnout.
Small, intentional shifts can turn the job you already have into one that feels way more fulfilling and one that actually aligns with your values.
Alignment isn’t about making massive, overnight changes. It’s about bridging the gap between who you are and how you live.
When your values, work, and lifestyle all vibe with each other, you become magnetic. Life feels lighter. You stop forcing yourself into a box that doesn’t fit and start attracting opportunities that feel effortless.
You’ve got this.
